And now back to the artsy stuff…3 emulsions part 2

WolfenColor NC400…. Or is it 200?

Here’s a wild card, an alleged new emulsion from Orwo. TBC I did not pay $23 a roll for this, short dated rolls were on sale at B&H for under $10, which meets the criteria so why not 🙂

From Orwo’s web site:

“WOLFEN NC400 is a brand, new 400 ASA, 36 exposure, colour photographic film…. Proudly still produced in Bitterfeld-Wolfen on the original site where film manufacture has been a tradition since 1910…. At the core of our new colour film lies a unique chemical formula based on the wonderful and legendary Agfa stock last used in the BAFTA award winning film ‘Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves’….”

As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. And this film stock is… well a little strange. So the same rules as the roll of Kodak: Nikon F6 in matrix metering mode with an AfD 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 zoom lens, bracketing exposers around box speed over and under 1 stop with normal development. Different days and different light, but only so much you can control. I’m not sure what they were going for with this one. If someone has some old Agfa negs to compare that would be interesting. At box speed (400iso) the colors are quite muted with lots of grain and a mild shift to the blues that leaves me feeling mildly underexposed. It completely falls apart underexposed a full stop and the blue shift gets pretty dramatic. It does however to come to life when overexposed a full stop and I’ll be shooting the rest of this batch at 200. Interesting.

Solidarity with MSP – Ice Out for Good!!

Philly hit the streets last night in solidarity with the January 23 Minneapolis strike to kick Ice out.

When we fight eachother for crumbs off the table it only makes the bosses stronger. We need to stop the deportations now! Full legal status for all!

We need a job for everyone who wants to work with union wages and working conditions. We need safe and reliable public transit. We need fully funded schools and city services. We need improved Medicare for all free at point of service, not massive cuts to Medicaid and medieval work requirements.

We don’t need masked and strapped thugs snatching our friends, neighbors and coworkers off the street. If we let them get away with it, this occupying army will be snatching us off picket lines next.

It’s time to get organized before Ice comes to Philly in force. Join an existing neighborhood response group or organize one on your block. Get trained up and know your rights. Support local orgs already doing this work:

Both Dems and Republicans have failed us. Both parties take the bosses money and keep us arguing with each other. It’s long past time to build a new working class party to fight for what need now instead of what the boss tells us is ‘reasonable’.

Twilight Into Night

A winters evening stroll through Center City Philadelphia. There’s always magic in the twilight. The city changes shape and sound. The sharp winter air cuts through and the debris of the day hides in the shadows. The night slowly comes to life.

Philly Vigil for Renee Good – NoIcePhilly

Federal IcE agents shot and killed Renee Good in Minneapolis last week. While there have been peaceful mass protests in MSP and across the US since, in Minneapolis armed federal agents are chasing school buses and knocking on doors demanding access to homes to ‘verify citizenship’.

There was a vigil for Renee Good at City Hall last Thursday evening and about 2000 of us showed up to pay respects and put Trump on notice that the brutal tactics of iCE agents will not be tolerated in our city. We don’t need masked armed gunmen in unmarked cars snatching people off the streets, we need full funding for SEPTA, Schools, affordable housing, improved Medicare for All and a living wage job with union rights and working conditions for anyone who wants to work.

Renee Good is the 4th person to be shot and killed by IcE over the past year, 32 people have died in custody and in addition to the thousands of documented and undocumented immigrants arrested, 100’s of US citizens – including minors – have been detained by federal agents, in some cases for days and weeks with no contact with families or legal defense. Street work with Cinestill400

Some sample frames from work in progress. Shot 2 rolls of 35mm Cinestill400, a motion picture film that’s been repurposed and marketed for still photography and standard C41 lab chemistry. Found a few light leaks, some interesting color shifts and contrast effects but nothing that would make me use it instead of a more traditional emulsion unless that’s all we’ve got after the zombie apocalypse 🙂

Ink and paper

3-11-23: Been spending some time printing photos to hang. It’s been refreshing to work with paper again after so much screen time these past couple years. I’ve made all the prints with a ‘hybrid’ process: film capture and development in C-41 chemistry by a local lab, then scanned and digitized, with basic ‘darkroom’ work done on the computer in adobe lightroom, then inkjet printed on archival paper. Here’s a teaser of 2 of the pieces from the show that should be up Monday or Tuesday next week 🙂 If you’re in Philly in March, drop by Higher Grounds cafe at 631 N 3rd (3rd and Fairmount) and take a looksie.
